Red-throated Loons in Central Sweden

Red-throated Loon is one of those birds I’ve seen quite a lot of times, but never really managed to get a good picture of. Every time I’ve been able to get close to a Red-throated Loon it’s always been overcast and a little windy, resulting in a lot of gray images without any reflections of the bird or the background in the water.

Therefore I made a little weekend trip to a secret place where I used my hide to get close. The loons were not breeding this year and therefore not present in their ponds during daytime, so got settled around 19 and went into the water. It was a really cool feeling when a large Loon came in landing only 20 meters from me an hour later, followed by its mate another 15 minutes later. I had a nice session with them for the rest of the evening until it got dark and I left.

I moved over to another little forest lake where 5 Loons were present in the morning. Unfortunately the light got harsh very fast, so the pictures didn’t turn out that great. If I return, which I think I will, I believe that these images can still be improved quite a lot, now that I know where to position myself next time.
